This is from a Calvin and Hobbes comic strip that I read when I was a kid and it really connected with me. I’ve always loved this particular strip.
The surreal idea of me growing old scares the crap out of me. I’m afraid of lacking guidance from my parents and teachers because I’m so use to it; sooner or later I’ll be an adult leaving this island paradise. But I’m prepared to leave, and start a whole new adventure on the mainland or some foreign country I haven’t been to. I have no connections in anywhere in the world besides Asia so this just means I have to work even harder to find a place to stay, how I’m going to eat, how am I going to pay rent, etc. etc… I’m confident I’ll get by, but I’m afraid I might fail and come back here just to hear from parents, friends: “I told you so”. I don’t want that to happen, or will I let it happen.
I talk about wanting to leave this island possibly with friends, but I know in reality we might drift apart pursuing our own different careers. However, if I do leave, will I ever make new friends? My social awkwardness has prevented me to make an assloads of friends for over the past 3-11 years of my life. So that may be a problem.
